largest company in the domestic chemical industry aims to become the continent's most
competitive polyurethane production base in the spirit of sustainability and innovation, while also
planning to build a significant position in the production of new chemicals. Its developments not
only strengthen competitiveness, but also contribute to supporting the local community and the
long-term, priority protection of the environment.
BorsodChem has become a key player in the European chemical industry in the field of plastic raw
materials and inorganic chemicals. The 2011 Wanhua acquisition was a 1.23 billion transaction,
which was the largest Chinese investment in Central and Eastern Europe up to that time. In the years
since the change of ownership, the Company has implemented the largest development program in
its history, worth EUR 1.8 billion, or more than 740 billion forints at current exchange rates. As part
of the investment series, the company expanded its production capacities, improved the quality of its
products and security of supply, and created the entire infrastructure of a new site suitable for
chemical production as part of a brownfield investment. The company carried out the
comprehensive development in order to become an indispensable factor in the European chemical
industry. In recognition of all this, Wanhua Chemical Group won this year's Investor Lifetime Award
from the HIPA National Investment Promotion Agency.
"The European economy, especially the chemical industry, continues to experience difficult times, as
the energy prices, previously increased to extreme highs, high inflation and market credit interest
rates have somewhat normalized, but demand is still strongly restrained due to significantly reduced
consumption. As a result, we are focusing more than ever on increasing our competitiveness, an
important element of which is to become a dominant player in the European market. We are proud of
our three-quarters of a century of history and the investments we have made so far, but now we are
focusing on the development path of the next 75 years” said Patrick Lu Hongjie, Chairman of the
Board of Directors of BorsodChem. “The company has set itself significant goals for the coming years.
Our aim is to develop BorsodChem into Europe’s most competitive polyurethane manufacturer and a
European manufacturing center for innovative new chemicals developed by the owner,” added the
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company.
With these steps, the company aims to double its sales revenue by 2030, which will also entail a
significant expansion of the current workforce of over 3,300. Thus, it will continue to be one of the
largest companies and employers in the region, which also means a serious responsibility towards
the local community and the environment. On the Responsible Care program – a voluntary,
international initiative of the chemical industry to improve its occupational health, safety and
environmental performance – certification audit examining nearly 250 aspects BorsodChem achieved
an excellent, 95.7% result. The fact that the Company won the Platinum Medal three times in a row
in the 2021-23 period in the sustainability assessment of the independent international company
EcoVadis, clearly reflects that it treats its sustainability and social responsibility activities as of high
importance, which it will continue to prioritize in the future.
Competitiveness-enhancing investments
In recent years, BorsodChem has increased and developed its production by numerous investments.
Among other things, it expanded the capacity of its main product (MDI, methylene diphenyl
diisocyanate) manufacturing plant, and started production the Aniline plant at its new, Site IV, which
can produce the most important raw material for MDI locally. In addition to increasing the security of
raw material supply, this latter facility also contributes to reducing transportation costs and the
carbon footprint by replacing previous Chinese imports. Also last year, the new natural gas-fired,
combined heat and power plant began operating, which is essential to meet the increased steam
demand resulting from the developments, but at the same time – together with the previously built
first, own industrial power plant – it also supplies more than a third of the company's electricity
needs.
